1. Infantile Eczema – The Bathing Method

Infantile eczema is now one of the most common and distressing skin conditions in early childhood, affecting up to one in five infants in industrialised countries. It's incidence continues to rise alongside allergic and autoimmune diseases. Crucially, this is also the ideal stage at which to intervene – effective early treatment can prevent years of chronic eczema and long-term suffering.

In this session, Dr. Al-Khafaji will demonstrate the highly effective bathing method for treating eczema in babies – a traditional therapeutic approach that he has further developed and refined over decades of clinical experience in treating babies.

The lecture will include:

• Pattern differentiation – As with all dermatological conditions, success in treatment depends on accurately identifying the morphology and underlying pathogenesis of the eruption.  Mazin will discuss in detail the main phenotypes encountered in practice, illustrated with extensive clinical slides from his own practice.
• Selection and preparation of the most effective herbal combinations for bathing decoctions – Mazin will give step-by-step instruction on the choice of herbs and formula construction based on clinical presentation, including how prescriptions should be adjusted as the skin improves and evolves. This method guides patients from acute, active disease towards stable, healthy skin with a fully restored barrier.
• Integration of external creams and ointments – Mazin will explain how to combine topical applications with the bathing method to enhance efficacy and accelerate recovery.

This session offers a rare opportunity to learn a method that provides rapid symptomatic relief while simultaneously addressing the underlying patho physiology from a Chinese medicine perspective – resulting in lasting, healthy skin function and an excellent long-term prognosis.

2. Inflammatory Arthritis – Classical Roots and Modern Application

The second half of the Masterclass will focus on Inflammatory Arthritis, particularly Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Psoriatic Arthritis – Both complex systemic diseases marked by immune dysregulation, chronic inflammation, and progressive joint damage. Their incidence continues to rise worldwide.

In Chinese medicine, such disorders fall under the broad spectrum of Bì zhèng 痹症 (painful obstruction syndromes). A specific subtype, Lì jié fēng 歷節風 – literally “wind of the successive joints” – described in the Su WenJin Gui Yao Lue, and other classical sources, most closely corresponds to these chronic auto-immune inflammatory joint diseases.

Mazin will present treatment protocols for a comprehensive clinical approach that integrate classical principles with modern understanding, focusing on:
• Differentiation of hot, cold, and mixed pattern types and how these evolve into chronic, deforming stages.
• The role of such factors as blood stasis, heat-toxin, and deficiency in perpetuating inflammation and tissue destruction.
• Targeted herbal prescriptions that not only alleviate pain, swelling, and stiffness, but also modulate the inflammatory process and stabilise immune function.
• Long-term management strategies designed to prevent relapse, maintain mobility, and protect joint integrity.

Participants will gain clear insights into how accurately matched herbal prescriptions – when tailored to the disease stage and underlying pathodynamics – can profoundly influence the course of inflammatory arthritis, improving both function and quality of life.

Mazin's teachings are entirely based on his own personal journey through Chinese Medicine since 1979, and condense his insights, clinical experience and results of over 4 decades of study and practice - all presented in an eminently comprehensive and relevant way which translates seamlessly into his students clinical work.
